Day 3 without Mr. Schick

Pages 160-165 (Questions 1, 3, 4 & 5)

Civil War - Conflict between groups in the same country (poor and rich in Rome).

Julius Caesar - a wealthy Roman and a genius military strategist.

Triumvirate - a group of three leaders.

Augustus - the title that Julius Caesar took, means "exalted one".

Pax Romana - "Roman Peace"

The fall of the Roman Republic was due to discontent among lower classes and a breakdown of the military order/power.

Romans were able to control such a large empire because they had a very good and working government system and they had able rulers that knew how to fight and control.

To control Rome, officials tried to provide free games, races, mock battles, and gladiator contests.

Pages 155-159 (Questions 1, 3, 4 & 5)

1. Define: 

Republic - a form of Government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote to form their leaders

Patricians - Wealthy landowners who held most of the power
Plebeians - the common farmers, artisans and merchants who made up most of the population.
Tribunes- The plebeians way of forming their own assembly and elect representatives under Rome.
Consuls - two officials who ran the government and commanded the army. Voted for by the people, each Consul's term was only one year.
Dictator- A leader who had absolute power to makes laws and command
Legions- The Roman Legion was made up of about 5000 foot soldiers, each legion was split into groups of 80 called Century.
Punic Wars- In 264 BC, the war between Rome and Carthage. This War was won by the Romans in 202 BC
Hannibal - A 29 year old Carthage General who was a brilliant mastermind.

3.  What Limits were there on the power of the Roman Consuls?

The Limits were: A Consul's term was only a year long. The same person couldn't be elected again for another 10 years.


4.  What was the significance of the Twelve Tables?

The creation of the Twelve Tables helped earned an important victory for the Plebeians and helped forced the creation of a written law code.


5. How was Hannibal's attack on Rome daring and different? 

He led his army on a long trek from Sprain across to France and through the Alps. Although he lost almost half of his men in the process. It gave him the will to march up and the Italian Peninsula.

Day 1 without Mr. Shick

Rome began as a republic, a government in which elected officials represent the people. Eventually, absolute rulers called emperors seized power and expanded the empire.


At its height, the Roman Empire touched three
continents—Europe, Asia, and Africa. For several centuries, Rome brought
peace and prosperity to its empire before its eventual collapse.

Out of Judea rose a monotheistic,
or single-god, religion known as Christianity. Based on the teachings of
Jesus of Nazareth, it soon spread throughout Rome and beyond.

509 BC- Rome becomes a republic
264 BC- First Punic War begins
218 BC- In the second Punic War Hannibal invades Italy
31 BC- Octavia defeats the forces of Antony and Cleopatra
284 AD- Diocletian becomes emperor
476 AD- Western Roman Empire falls

Today in class we were played a rap about Rome, it was to the beat of Low i think, i don't know. Mr. Shick wrote himself. He leaves tomorrow and we wont see him for another two weeks.

Today we learned that Mr Schick would be out for two weeks because of a surgery. Some people are saying he is "having a baby" and Mr. Schick is going along with it. I hope the surgery goes well and he is safe.

Today in Class, I took my test i got a 93% on it. That is really good for me, I had to leave right at 1:30 for a track meet and i didnt get home until 8. I don't really know what else we learned in class that day but im satisfied with my test grade.

Today we reviewed some more, we were handed a paper that had moments in history done by a certain king and we had to match it up to who was who. We also had a really weird discussion about Oedious Rex which still kinda shakes me to my core but besides that it was good

Today in class we reviewed for the upcoming test, I won't be here when they take the test so im going to have to do it the day we come back. Its going to be a struggle but ill get through it. We took notes on the differences between each other the Kings: Phillip II, Alexander the Great and others.

1. Philip II - The Macedonian King who conquered Greece. Father of Alexander the Great.
    Macedonia - Kingdom located above Greece, had a cold and rough climate
    Alexander the Great- Son of Philip II, King of the largest Empire in history
    Darius III -  The Persian King who lost his kingdom to Alexander the Great after he lost.

3. Philip II turned the Macedonian Peasants into a professional army. Used a phalanx formation of 16 men across and 16 deep to break all enemy lines.

4. He wanted to conquer all of the land all the way to the farthest edge of the continent, he wanted to conquer all of the known world

5. The Alexandrian Empire was split into 3 people's rule after they couldn't decide who to give it too. The leader with the biggest impact would be Ptolemy as he would restore Egypt to it's former glory.

Today in class we talked about some kind of play where some guy slept with his mom and killed his dad it was really wack. We took a pop quiz and i got a 12/14 so eh i guess. We don't have his class tomorrow but i hope to see my project grade on our Thermopylae Model soon.

Questions 1, 3, 4 & 5


  1. Direct Democracy- a form of Democracy in which the people rule and not through representatives.
  2. Classic Art- The Greek's values of harmony, order, balance and proportion. 
  3. Tragedy- A type of Drama that was serious that often had common themes of love, hate, war or betrayal. 
  4. Comedy- Drama that contained scenes filled with Slapstick situations and crude humor. 
  5. Peloponnesian War- War between Sparta and Athens that started in 431 that ultimately ended in the Collapse of the Athenian Empire. 
  6. Philosophers- The Great minds of Greece, means "Lovers of Wisdom" 
  7. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle- The Great Philosophers of Greece. 

3. After the defeat of the Persians, Athens organized the Delian League between the City States. Pericles used the money of the Leagues Treasury to strengthen the Athenian Navy

Today in Class we listened to the rest of the projects, they were all good. Honestly I don't think there was a bad project in the whole entire class. Out of the 3 presentations today though; my favorite has to be Kyle, Trent and Sean's "Life of a Spartan Soldier".
